Testing Centre (Electrical Engineering)

The testing centre of the Department of Electrical Engineering has been started in 1977. The lab has the facility of doing all type tests as per IS 13010-2002 and 13779-1999.

The following tests were done for electromechanical type of energy meters as per IS: 13010-2002.

  1. Insulation resistance

  2. Running with no load

  3. Starting

  4. Limits of errors

  5. Interpretation of test results and adjustments (if required)

  6. Test of meter constant

  7. Power loss

  8. Heating

  9. Impulse voltage test

  10. ac voltage test

  11. Effect of influence quantities

  12. Effect of short circuits

  13. Effect of self heating

  14. Range of adjustment

  15. Independence of adjustment

  16. Sustained accuracy test

  17. Running at low load

  18. Repeatability of error

  19. Shock

  20. Vibration

  21. Test for material used in dial

  22. Test of protection against penetration of dust and water

  23. Mechanical test of meter case

 

The following tests were done for electrostatic type of energy meters as per IS: 13779-1999.

The lab has also facility for testing cables of size 1 mm2, 1.5 mm2, 2.5 mm2, 4 mm2, 6 mm2, 10 mm2, 16 mm2, 25 mm2 and 35 mm2 for single core PVC insulated (unsheathed) cables, 0.5 mm2, 0.75 mm2, 1 mm2, 1.5 mm2, 2.5 mm2 and 4mm2 for flexible PVC insulated (unsheathed) cables, 6 mm2, 10 mm2, 16 mm2, 25 mm2, 35 mm2 and 50 mm2 for single core unsheathed flexible cables as per IS 694

PVC insulated (Heavy duty) Electrical cables 1554-1988 of size 25 mm2, 35 mm2, 50 mm2, 70 mm2, 95 mm2, 120 mm2, 150 mm2, 185 mm2, 240 mm2, 300 mm2, 400 mm2, 500 mm2, 630 mm2,800 mm2 and 1000 mm2 and XLPE (cross linked polyethylene), PVC sheathed cables as per IS: 7098 Part-1, 1988 cables of size 1.5 mm2, 2.5 mm2, 4 mm2, 6 mm2, 10 mm2, 16 mm2, 25 mm2, 35 mm2, 50 mm2, 70 mm2, 95 mm2, 120 mm2, 150 mm2, 185 mm2, 240 mm2, 300 mm2, 400 mm2, 500 mm2 and 630 mm2.

 

The following tests are done

  1. Resistance test

  2. Wrapping tests

  3. Tensile tests

  4. Thickness of insulation

  5. Thickness of sheath

  6. Receptivity

  7. Flammability test

  8. High voltage tests

  9. Insulation resistance tests

The lab has also facility for doing acceptance tests as per IS 2086/1982 and its latest amendments for testing rewirable type of fuse units. The following tests were conducted.

  1. Temperature rise in base and carrier

  2. Insulation resistance

  3. High voltage test

Lab has also facility for testing LT porcelain stray insulators as per IS 5300-1969 and its latest amendments. The following acceptance tests were done.

  1. HT withstand tests Normal (dry) 3kV rms for 1 min.

  2. Porosity test

  3. Temperature cycle tests.

The lab has also the facility to do 11 kV composite disc insulators as per IEC 61150, 11 kV porcelain pin insulators and LT porcelain shackle insulators as per IS 1445-1997 and its latest amendments.

The lab has also facility for doing test for lightning arrestors as per IS 3070 (Part-3)-1993 and its latest amendments. Acceptance tests for 11 kV, 400 A, Air blast switches (AB) as per IS 9920/9921-1985 and its latest amendments are also carried out.

1. HT withstand tests (dry) between earth and line (switch closed) 35 kV rms

2. HT withstand tests (dry) between poles (switch open) 45 kV rms

3. Impulse withstand tests 75 kV peak 1.2/50 micro second

4. Resistance

5. Temperature rise

Fluorescent tubes, sodium vapour lamp, mercury vapour lamp, incandescent lamp, LED lamp, CFL lamp, automatic LED street light, automatic CFL street light are also tested.

AC arc welding plants, three phase induction motors, automotive batteries, generators (diesel, petrol and gas), UPS etc. Calibration of HV transformers of various ratings and oil test kits can also be done on this lab.
