Seventy years ago on 3rd of July, 1939, when war clouds were looming large over the skies of Europe and the entire world, the College of Engineering, Trivandrum came into existence. The institution owes its foundation to the bold and inspired vision of His Highness the Maharaja of Travancore - a dream which has materialised into the mighty edific of today, the Alma Mater to tens of thousands of engineers who have passed out of her stately portals.

It now claims as its own a majestic structure set on a hillock as the main building around which are spread the departmental buildings the Technical Library (among the biggest of its kind in India), laboratories, workshops, hostels, indoor stadium, playgrounds and staff quarters, all set in a lush green campus covering an area of over 110 acres. The total population in the campus, off staff and students, is roughly 3500. During the last 70 years several new departments have been started and older ones recast. The total number of departments is now eight and the college is affiliated to the University of Kerala. The insitution has thus grown and expanded steadily, so much so that today it is not only the largest engineering college in Kerala, but one of the biggest in the country.

The College of Engineering, Trivandrum admits nearly 570 students per year into B.Tech courses in eitht different disciplines based on the rank scored by the aspiritng candidates in the Kerala Common Entrance Test conducted by the Government of Kerala. As most of the top scoreres choose this College as their first choice of institutions, the students admitted are the cream of nearly 50,000 candidates appearing for the entrance examination every year in Kerala. Admission to the 150 odd seats in 18 streams of Post Graduate M.Tech couses is on the basis of GATE scores while that to MCA by an entrance test. Apart from this there are doctoral programmes in different disciplines. All the eligible B.Tech and M.Tech courses are acredited by NBA.

The acceptance of the college as one of the best in the country is borne out by the fact that a very large number of top level industrial organisations in the country visit the campus regularly to conduct campus recruitment. These organisations have been immensely satisfied with the quality of the students. This college has earned a name for itself by contributing competent engineers in different fields.
